School Visits
I would love to visit your school!
From single classroom visits to multi-grade assemblies, I’m excited to work with you to plan a program that fits your curricular needs and ignites a love of reading and writing in your students.
School programs using the book IGGY WHO BREATHES FIRE include:
“Finding Your Fire”
(30 minutes, recommended for K-1st grade)
We’ll start with an interactive read of the book, working together to notice how shapes, colors, and hidden surprises in the art help to tell the story.
Then we’ll talk about what “fire” can mean for each of us – just like Iggy finds and follows her spark, what lights you up inside? What makes you, YOU?
Movement and Q&A will be incorporated, and classrooms can choose to include either a simple themed craft or guided drawing activity.
“It Starts with a Spark”
(30-45 minutes, recommended for 2nd to 3rd grade)
After an interactive reading of the book, we’ll discuss the process of how a book is made – from initial idea to bookstore shelves. Students will get a “behind the scenes” look at the first “spark” of inspiration and early drafts of Iggy Who Breathes Fire.
Then we’ll begin writing our own stories, using fun brainstorming exercises to generate “sparks” for new story ideas!
Movement and time for Q&A will be incorporated, and additional writing/drawing exercises can be added depending on curricular needs of the classroom.
“Igniting Your Writing”
(45-60 minutes, recommended for 4th grade & up)
Picture books are a rich and accessible form of literature that can be used by all ages to study universal elements of storytelling. After a close, interactive read of Iggy Who Breathes Fire, we’ll share our ideas about the symbolism of colors, shapes, and language used throughout the book. We’ll explore how to elevate our own writing through metaphor and simile, idioms, dialogue tags, repetition, humor, and more! There is also the option to discuss design elements of picture books.
All programs can be adapted for grade levels other than those recommended as well as for larger groups – please reach out to discuss your curriculum needs!
